Lumpia Shanghai

Lumpia is a type of Filipino spring roll that is commonly served as a snack or appetizer. It is made by filling a thin crepe-like wrapper with a mixture of vegetables, meat, and/or seafood, and then rolling and frying it until crispy.

The filling can vary widely depending on the cook's preference and availability of ingredients, but commonly includes ingredients such as shredded cabbage, carrots, bean sprouts, ground pork, and shrimp. It is usually seasoned with soy sauce, garlic, and onion.

Lumpia is often served with a dipping sauce made with vinegar, soy sauce, and chili peppers. It can also be served with sweet chili sauce or a garlic mayonnaise dipping sauce. Lumpia is a popular dish in the Philippines and is also enjoyed in other parts of Southeast Asia and around the world where Filipino cuisine is represented.

lumpia

Ingredients:

  • 1 package of Lumpia wrappers (spring roll wrappers)
  • 1 lb ground pork
  • 1 cup shredded cabbage
  • 1 cup shredded carrots
  • 1 cup bean sprouts
  • 1/2 cup chopped onions
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • Oil for frying

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, mix together the ground pork, shredded cabbage, shredded carrots, bean sprouts, chopped onions, soy sauce, minced garlic, and black pepper.
  2. Take a Lumpia wrapper and place about 1 tablespoon of the filling mixture onto one corner of the wrapper.
  3. Fold the corner with the filling over and tuck it in slightly. Then, fold the sides of the wrapper in towards the center, and roll the wrapper tightly like a burrito.
  4. Repeat with the remaining wrappers and filling mixture.
  5. Heat oil in a deep skillet or wok over medium-high heat.
  6. Fry the Lumpia in the hot oil until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side.
  7. Remove the Lumpia from the oil and place on paper towels to drain excess oil.
  8. Serve hot with a dipping sauce of your choice.

Note: You can also add other ingredients to the filling mixture such as shrimp, sliced mushrooms, or diced water chestnuts. Additionally, you can make a vegetarian version by substituting the ground pork with tofu or tempeh.
