Sweet and Sour Fish

Sweet and sour fish is a popular dish in the Philippines that is enjoyed by many. Here is a recipe for sweet and sour fish Filipino style:

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb. fish fillets, cut into serving pieces
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. black pepper
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • oil for frying
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 red bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper, sliced
  • 1/4 cup pineapple chunks
  • 1/4 cup vinegar
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 tbsp. cornstarch
  • salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine cornstarch, all-purpose flour, salt, and black pepper. Mix well.

  2. Dip the fish fillets in beaten egg, then coat with the cornstarch mixture.

  3. In a frying pan, heat oil over medium heat. Fry the fish fillets until golden brown. Drain on paper towels and set aside.

  4. In a separate pan, sauté onion, red and green bell peppers, and pineapple chunks until tender.

  5. In a small bowl, mix together vinegar, ketchup, brown sugar, water, and cornstarch. Pour the mixture into the pan with the sautéed vegetables. Cook until the sauce thickens.

  6. Add the fried fish fillets into the pan and toss to coat with the sauce. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

  7. Serve hot with steamed rice.
